My pull cord (used for starting the engine) on my John Deere TRS24 from 1994 tore. I only lost one inch in the length of it so I'm trying to put it back together. I would appreciate any directions or advice.

Takes two people to make this easier. If it's a conventional set up take off the pull cord housing usually 4 bolts or screws to remove. Look in side and you will see small bent flanges that hold the round device that the cord is wrapped into and around. Here's the tricky part Try to fish the end of the cord out and get in hand. Here's the even tricker part. You are going to have to re tension the spring load pressure on the cord before you put the handle end back on and test it length. When these brake it usually spins around in that housing and losses it pretension so the cord doesn't lay there and have a 3 or 8 inches dangling out of the housing after you pulled it. I replaced to many on our construction saw and mixers. If working the cord around that housing is to tuff slightly bend those metal tabs(prongs) and this gives more play room to spin the flat cord pulley like housing around to put more hold onto the cord and use that to help spin it around. If you get this round rope pulley yo high a metal band spring will take off and wissh and not its from scratch then you will really know how it works. After you get a couple of spins back on out the broken back through the guide hole ( The place it pulls from) and hold on real good to the rope and make sure you hands partially holding ht flat pulley and pull on the cord slowly and let it go back to wards the housing and does all of the slack get taken up. If so put your T end back on and tie it off good. You might have a newer t Handel which has a cap and then a little metal bar the rope gets tied around If it's the old style double loop to get it fat so it doesn't pull back through. On mine I snip the excess off the rope tie sticking out leave about a 1/2 and melt the end with a match to keep fraying occurring later on the end of the rope. To put housing back on you need to sometimes pull on the rope to inter connect the shaft of the motor and the rope housing Sorry for this long explanation. P.S. If the band springs losses its tension you have to have two people.

If you only lost an inch then just rig it back together, MOST (caution with this word, most not all) rewinds allow for some slack (the distance between where the rope is at when it starts and how far the rope goes back total) so if you just lost 1 inch you shousl still be fine! Tearing the rewind apart is a lot of extra work if it's something as simple as making a new knot! :)
