Do I need to claim three separate state taxes this year?
Hi - I am an IT consultant who lives in Boston, MA. I worked for two different firms at two different client sites this year. The first was in Honoulu, HI. This was an outsourcing position so I was forced to take a second residence there from Jan. 1st - March 16th. I never left my residence in Boston, I thought this was going to be a longer contract so I got a second apartment. I paid full Hawaii taxes and no MA taxes during that time.

I then went back to normal weekly consulting with a new firm and was placed in Cincinnati, OH. Here I pay full Ohio taxes and partial MA taxes. The new company is based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Will I need to file three separate state taxes this year? What status do I claim for each of these states? Can I do this using a service like TaxAct or TurboTax?

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, you will need to file state tax returns for MA, OH and HI. For OH and HI, you will file as a non-resident and pay taxes ONLY on the income earned in each respective state.

For MA, you will pay taxes on ALL of your salary (because MA is your state of residency), and claim credits for the OH and HI taxes paid.

Both TurboTax and TaxAct offer state tax returns for all states that have state income taxes.
