    Potatoes in tires
    Anyone ever grow potatoes in tires stacked 4 or 5 high. I read somewhere some time ago that you can start potatoes in the first tire, and as they grow, pile soil up over the tops and they will just keep going until you have a sky high tube of tires totally teaming with tubers. :rolleyes:

    I tried it this spring but at the middle of the third tire they died. If anyone knows the secret to this please share? :confused:

    The tires acting as an insulator and heat sink for the taters makes sense...

    Truthfully, I'd never heard of it, but did find it far more common that I imagined. Here are a couple links that give some tips:

    Thanks Rick. I see the problem. You have to leave at least two inches of green tops sticking up above the dirt. I think I must have gotten a little carried away and just covered them every time they poked out. I will try again next year.
