Breaking a lease for medical issues
My friend was attending UCF last fall and leased an apartment at Pegasus Landing. After a month she was forced to return home due to a medical condition. She had intended to return in January but the condition did not allow it. She was told by office staff at leasing office her apartment would be put at top of release list so she could sub-lease it without breaking lease. It was never released by apartment managers and now they want Jan-July rent money. I find it hard to believe no one needed an apartment during that time. She made countless attemps to find someone on her own to lease it to but apparently they did not make any effort to help. My thought is the right thing to do would be to allow the lease to be broken. My question is, is there legal presidence for the breaking of a lease due to unforseen medical situation. They have waited almost 9 months to now send this matter to collections. Any thoughts or recommendations on the matter?
