    No Sound and ICON gone
I have done everything suggested to me and I still have NO SOUND. When I 'rolled back" as was suggested it took away my SoundMax2 and won't reinstall it, also my volume icon in the tray is gone I tried the sndvol132 no luck. I have restored to a new restore point.

Bottom Line I cannot get sound. The media will play but no sound. I cannot find my hand book but is there a common F-key I may have hit to take away the sound? I have a compaq presario laptop 1720 US series.
I do not know what to do.
    Thanks for any help.

Guess we need to check if you have the driver installed properly. Go to:
    • Click on Start >> Control Panel
    • Click on System
    • Switch to the hardware tab
    • Click on the Device Manager button
    • See if there is a section called "Other Devices" with a yellow question mark next to it.
    • Expand this and see what's under it - is there anything sound related?
    • Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers". Check if your sound card is in there.

If you have any yellow question marks under other devices - you may need to download your audio drivers again. You can get those from here:

Have you tried 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in the 'Control Panel'

Open 'Sounds and Audio Devices' go to the 'Volume' tab and in the section 'Device volume' click 'Advanced' to check volume settings.

In the section 'Speaker settings' click 'Advance' to choose the speakers that you are using.
