I need more information ? What's there now? Pick a spot on where you want to start and carefully start there. You may need to saw cut where the removed floor and other floor meet. Pry up old floor with a hammer, roofing bar, pry bar, small chisle, and maybe all of these tools may be needed to remove old floor ( Safety Glasses required.)do so.101 A floor can be concrete on grade or above grade Basic flooring is wood joist with a 3/4 tongue and grove plywood sheet over the actual joist in newer construction . Over that can be carpet or hardwood floor Or 1/4" luan for vinyl on top. Older floors can be 3/4 tounge and groove boards 3 1/2" to 4" or a little wider. .Another old floor is very thick 1" to 1 1/4"wide planking with out the tounge and grove. These all can be considered a "sub floor" if any floor is added to the 1st layer of floor that sits on the joist. If you have a layer of floor you can take out and not fall through the joist that floor becomes a subfloor. You need a subflooor to lay ant other flooring unless you just use carpet. Usally a 1/4" thick luan is used for a better surface to gule another floor down such as vinyl/ Soliran/ press and place V.C.T. Normally a 1/4" ply "Luan" is nailed down first to cover imprefctions on the subfloor or mainly that if the floor gets changed the finish floor is ripped up and the luan is pryed up and now a fresh start with no glue to scrape up. Tile needs a subfloor to lay on. The subfloor over that for tile can be luan or backer board. You ac use a glue mastic to st floor tile in many areas. I prefer backer board and a thin layer of speed patch to take out any dips in the subfloor so the backer board sets very flat and solid. The I tile on the backer board. If I have more information from you I can help better or maybe this explains enough for your to resolve your question. Happy Holidays
