I woke up this morning to water on the bathroom floor. It is leaking out of a hairline crack in the toilet tank (presumably ceramic) which holds the refill water. I live in a 1951-built ranch with a finished basement. The water is also leaking out of pipes in the basement underneath the upstairs toilet — the pipe from the toilet is very large (15" in diameter), and I don't know whether they are also leaking or if the water is dripping down from the bathroom floor above along the pipes. Can such a crack be repaired? Do I need to get a new toilet? Will the entire plumbing have to be replaced? I'm scared of the cost of such a project.

Turn the water off at the toilet, drain the tank and dry everything the best you can. Yes, you will need a new toilet. They can start as low as 99 dollars at home depot or Lowe's and go up from there. They are pretty simple to replace. Just ask when you get the new toilet.

From my own experience, hair-line crack in china cannot be repaired. Yes, it is cheaper to buy new toilet. Some toilets sell for as little as $50.00.
