I have a 401k. I want to know how I can find out how much I have in it?

Your company is required to give you periodic statements, usually quarterly. You can always contact the benefits administrator for an update. Many plans give you an online statement you can check.

Just to be clear - the statement doesn't come from your employer, but rather from the company your empoyer has hired to be the 401(k) plan administrator. This is typically a brokerage (such as Fidelity, Vanguard, etc), bank, or insurance company.

That actually depends on the company. In some cases, usually very large companies, either the plan is administered inhouse or the administrator prepares customized statements. I just looked at one of my statements from my last employer and it appears to be issued directly from the company.
