Emergency heat on, Aux heat off, fan working.
    I do have heat.

The fan outside is working on the heat pump. Inside unit is on.

Heat Pump is set to Aux heat, with AUTO for fan. But the Aux heat is NOT what is on. The Aux light is OFF.

I do NOT have it set to emergency heat, but the emergency heat light is ON.

    What is causing this?

What parts do I need to have to fix this?

A friend came over, and we replaced the capacitor already.

Yes, the blower is on inside. Everything is working (it is warm), it seems anyhow, but the emergency light is on instead of the aux heat light. This makes me think that I am using the heat strips instead of the heat pump. I do not want a $700 light bill. I have only a tiny income, and that is almost all my income.

Is it possible that the heat pump is by chance in defrost? Or maybe it has an outdoor thermostat installed? Is the heatpump (outside) still running?

Not sure what you mean by being "in defrost." but there is no ice anywhere on the unit or in the system- inside or outside. Everything is clean, well clean enough.

The unit appears to be working outside. The fan out there is on. But if it is doing any other work out there, I am not sure.

I have one themostat that I am aware of... and that is inside

Heatpumps have a defrost mode, most models bring on emergency heat when they go into defrost. What do you have the thermostat set on? What is the indoor tempature?

Aux heat mode NEVER comes on.. . it always say emergency heat...

Right now the thermostat is on 68F. That is the house temperature.

It is set to be at 68F for now. I am trying to be conservative with the heat until I solve this problem.

What brand is the thermostat? If it is older something may be defective with the indicator lights.

    Honeywell - digital

I am trying to determine the model number... it looks similar to, but not exactly like this one, but it is not programmable.

Could there be a compressor problem?

If the heat pump is running I would say the compressor is fine. Is it a honeywell?

    That is good to hear.

Yes it is a digital honeywell... simple style, not programmable... look at previous messages... I give links to try to show what it looks similar to.

The heat pump is a York...

The thermostat is a digital honeywell. See previous descriptions

Someone said it might be a "condensor for the motor" does that make any sense?

Switch the thermostat to emergency heat, then back to heat. See what happens.

    What is the outside tempature?

    outside temp = 56F

    switch to EMER heat makes:
the inside unit blower turns on
the outside fan does NOT come on
a black arrow points to EMER setting

switch back to aux - regular - heat:
the inside unit blower turns on
    the outside fan comes on
NO black arrow appears on thermostat under AUX

in both cases, the "flame" icon appears between and above the 2 numbers... ex, 6^9

My guess is that everything is working fine. Emergency icon is not showing up in regular heat mode, correct?

I'm not sure exactly what is making you think that you are running emergency heat?

There is no emergency icon... there is just one flame that I see... it is situated between the 2 numbers...

    6^8
    7^2

the flame is closer to the word EMER than to the word AUX... I was told the EMER heat was on, and not the AUX heat...

I was expecting that the icon location would be

    EMER... AUX

    ^ 68 for EMER

    68 ^ for AUX

Maybe it is the way we read the thermostat..

anyhow, since the OUTSIDE fan on the heat pump is coming on, while on the regular heat setting, that means we are using the AUX heat, and not the EMER heat?

I'm guessing you are looking to deep into this, the icons are pretty close together,as long as it is not showing emergency heat on the display screen and the heat pump is coming on outside, you should be fine.
