My shihtzu had 2 puppies. One died today from hypoglycemia and anemia. The other one seems fine but is sluggish. They were born on Nov 7. The mother is weening them but I can't get the puppy to try and eat food. What am I doing wrong.

Have you taken the puppy to the vet? I have never heard of a dog having hypoglycemia. It may be too soon to wean the puppy. Please take to the vets or you will lose that puppy as well.

The vet is closed till Monday. How soon should you ween a puppy. I thought it was between 6 - 8 weeks that they should be weened by 8 weeks. Others have said 4 weeks.

I took the other dog to the vet. He's the one who told me the dog had hypoglycemia which sounded strange to me also. He has the degree not me.

Don't wean such young puppies especially the smaller breeds like yours. They need mother's milk longer due to their small body weight. Try a different vet. I don't like the way that guy sounds. I don't want you to lose your little one. Just because this guy is a vet doesn't mean he knows what he's doing. There are quack vets just as there are quack human doctors.
