My 26 year old daughter has developed very dark discolorations on both cheeks. The areas seem to get progressively larger and she now says they are starting to "raise" in some places. She has been dealing with this for a period of several years now. She is not pregnant. She had her uterus removed approx. 8-10 years ago. The condition was not present prior to the removal of the uterus, but did not appear immediately thereafter, either. She has not had success in questioning her GP. The GP is treating her for Fibromialgia - and she is tested about once a year for M.S... although to date the tests have all come bace negative. The doctor has also suspected Lupus, but there has been no definitive results for that either. She is overweight and is obviously not a happy person. These dark areas are becoming quite disfiguring and are adding to her depression. WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS DISCOLORATION??

I have seen the "butterfly" mask which is part of Lupus (Discoid or Systemic Erythematus with skin manifestations) appear dark as opposed to red and also raised. As far as I know Fibromyalgia is diagnosed based on symptoms - there is no lab test. There ARE blood tests to diagnose Lupus, as well as criteria.

I'd check it out.

I have to agree. My gut instinct told me it was the butterfly mask associated with Lupus.
