Help! There's no cold water to my tub/shower. The mixer/hub has a single knob Moen cartridge (which matches a "Moen - Magnum Replacement Cartridge" #1225 from "Home Depot") sticking out of it but, I can't see much of the front of the mixer without major surgery on the wall & I don't see any other identifying markings.

I flushed hot water through the empty stub at the mixer, corked that, & back-flushed hot water down through the disassembled cold shut-off valve in the wall. I also flushed cold water up through that same disassembled cold shut-off valve in the wall. Water flowed freely & no debris came out. However, upon reassembly I still can't get cold water from the mixer, tub spout, nor shower. I can hear the cold water hiss & gurgle up the pipe but, it stops & nothing but a trickle comes from the cold side.

Does that mixer have adjustments on the front side that I can't see or are there other possibilities?

You may need to remove the cartridge and install it back per the link below, Good Luck.

Thanks but, been there, done that. The lack of cold water through the "t" shaped mixer/hub where the cold supply, hot supply, tub spout, shower, cartridge & control knob meet has been a problem since before I took anything apart. Hot water flows fine in every direction, even back down the cold water supply side if I cork the hole where the cartridge was, shut off the cold water supply to the bathroom under the floor, & remove the knob & works from the cold water shut off in the tub wall. No other fixture is affected. However, it was all working fine before my water heater went nova & had to be replaced.

I'm wondering how an anti-scald system works & if it could have been damaged to the point of working backwards when the water heater "super heated," now blocking water "too cold" instead of "too hot" but, I just don't know how they work. Are there any good diagrams of anti-scald systems or explanations of how they work inside available?

I'd call Moen and get a free replacement cartridge, they are guaranteed for life. Install the new one using the old anti scald gears but closely follow the instructions on how to adjust the scald device, I do not install them until I talk it over with the homeowner, many folks do not need or want them at all. I agree with Bob, you can call Moen and explain your problem like Bob says they will send any part that you need for this job for free, also Can you provide us the model Number of your faucet; you said it is Moen didn't say the model number, Thanks.

'Never found a model number... However, see below:

Cold water flowing at last! We finally got... tired of blind man's bluff, cut & removed the line between the cold shut-off in the wall to the mixer. All was clear until the street 90º into the mixer, which was clogged almost solid with gritty red mud. We replaced the 90º then went CPVC to the shut-off, shop-vacuumed & flushed both sides out the mixer.
'Had a leak at the top of the plastic screw-in connector, removed the tape from it, coated the threads with White TFE Paste Pipe Thread Compound, tightened it much more than before, "White Doped" & reconnected the three piece CPVC to Copper Union into the shut-off valve: no more leaks!
The next "female dog" was the cartridge retainer clip that didn't want to seat... Much repeated cleaning, poking, prodding, wiggling, cursing, time, & wonderment went into that little... but, after re-scraping all involved surfaces again with a screwdriver & trying again it finally popped down into it's bottom slot & the rest could be assembled.
No "anti-scald" device was found nor cogs nor gears of any sort so, I assume I was "barking up the wrong tree" there.
It's done. Next!...

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, you done a Great job and I am glad it is done.
The only question I have is that you mentioned on your first post you had flushed both hot and cold side with the cartridge removed and you had a good flow now where the red mud came from, I know it is from the water heater but when you flushed the first time it should have gone.

See when there is any plumbing work done in a house and people have any problem with any of their faucets the first thing we ask them to remove the Aerator clean and install and also ask them to remove the cartridge and flush out the debris, Thanks.

That does confuse me. The only thing I can figure is that "plug" of muck moved enough to allow seemingly free flow when back-flushed with the hot water but, why still none came out & why it seems to have picked that steel 90º to rest & not to have affected other plastic & copper 90ºs puzzles me.
It did "thump" sometimes when the cold water came up & stopped at the clog. There does seem to be a high mineral content in that muck. My brother suggested "electrolysis" between the steel 90º, copper pipe, brass mixer, & whatever is in that muck. Also, the holes into & the mixing chamber & cartridge look amazingly small for the volume of water handled so, I imagine that could stop that plug of mud as well. But, I really just don't know.
Next we're installing a small filter in the supply line before the pressure tank, & trying to coax the oil burner back to life again...
