I need to file taxes for 2006 and 2007
I did not file my taxes for the years of 2006 and 2007. In 2006 I earned very little income and in 2007 earned none. I have tried contacting the employers for 2006 to get w-2's but have had no success. Is there a way to find out what they filed for me? I am currenlty working overseas to get my financial future together. But first I have to fix my past. Also what type of penalties and fees am I looking at for filing my taxes late.

You do not need to file if your income if you had no income, so it would seem you do not need to file for 2007. As for 2006 - do you know what your gross income was? You say it was "very little" - if you are single you do not need to file unless your income exceeded $8450, or $16,900 if you are married and filing jointly. If your income was less than this there's no need to file; however you may still want to if you are due a refund. If you made more than this then you must file; the amount of any interest or penalties will depend on the amount of tax you owe for that year.

Your employer should have sent you your W2 for tax-year 2006 in January 2007 - if you can't find it the only way to get a copy is to ask your employer for it.

    There is another alternative.

Call the IRS at 215-516-2000 and ask for your tax transcript for 2006 to be mailed to you. This is a FREE service, and the transcript should have the W-2 information you need. It will take about 2-3 weeks to get to you.

With it, any competent tax professional can use 2006 tax software to produce a useable W-2 from the W-2 masque in the software to produce your federal return. Contact the local U.S. consulate office for a list of U.S. tax preparers at your foreign location.

Unfortunately, the W-2 information in the tax transcript does NOT have the state tax withholdings, so you will need to call the state for the state-equivalent tax transcipt.
