    In most cases , replacing the timing CHAIN isn't necessary at all. Belts are a different story. Recommended change intervals for timing BELTS is around 80,000 miles. You first must determine whether you have a chain or a belt. Chains were used exclusively until 2001 in the Altima engine but I do not know what the spec was from then on. I have been restoring Altimas from '93-'99. It's amazing how many people like to hang on to them.
