Our dashchund is on Prozac now because of some very aggressive behavior toward family members (he growls and snaps any time he is moved or touched--more so at night and especially when touched with feet accidentally or otherwise). This behavior initialy got better after starting the Prozac, but now has gotten worse. 1)Could the medicine have made it worse? 2)Any behavioral/training suggestions to help this situation without drugs? We plan to start a family soon and this behavior cannot happen around a baby.

This behavior can most definatley happen around a baby. I would think twice about having a baby with this dog around. You don't mention the dog's age, but the issues may get worse with age.

This is one of those questions where I feel challenged to be as diplomatic as I want to be... if you prefer a prescription drug over proper training as a means to correct a behavioral problem in a breed of dog that is known for being somewhat aggressive and territorial, then perhaps a dog is not for you, especially this one?

There is a lot that goes into the raising a well mannered dog that goes beyond the feeding, exercising and house training. The first is in understanding the breed to make sure it's a good fit for the kind of environemnt you will be providing. The second is in creating a place in the "dog pack" (ie, your family) for the pet and making sure the hierarchy of it is clearly established and maintained. Letting your dog become "alpha dog", or leader of the pack, is the surest way to failure. And giving off mixed signals about his place in the hierarchy will make for a neurotic dog guaranteed. Then there is all that you need to know about how to train your pet on all the do's and don'ts of living peacefully with you. It is a lot like raising a child, only you get to skip having to dress them and they are always talking in a foreign language!

Reconsider your commitment to the dog. Read a great little book about "The Hidden Life of Dogs". Look into learning about training, if you are going to keep him. Books and classes abound. Good luck and thanks for posting.
