We are having problems with our bath tub drain. We have used draino and the like and for a short period it works. However I am looking for a more efficeint fix. I have tried to remove the drain cover before but am unable to do so. I assumed it was attatched to the overflow, but was wrong. The cover is different than most I have seen. If I turn it a 1/4 way, it props up and allows the tub to drain. If I turn it another 1/4 way, it sets back in and covers the drain. How do I remove this sort of design?

Hold it down hard and turn it counterclockwise with a pair of pliers.

Can you take a picture of the cover and post it here.

I believe he may have a turn and set type stopper. No lever at overflow plate. Correct me if I'm wrong west.

Exactly what I thought you had. Just put it in the down position and turn counterclockwise. Either the hole plug will come out, or just the top handle piece. If just the top handle piece comes out, there will be a screw underneith that you will have to take out to take the rest of the plug out. Please let me know how it works for you.
I do believe that taking this apart will not solve your problem(unless there is a lot of hair, etc below it) Most likely you will have to inspect p-trap and or auger tub drain beyond trap. Keep us posted please. Take care.

You were absolutely correct, I miss read it in the beginning, and you are right it would not help.

If you look close to the drain you may see a small set screw you need to remove that and be able to remove the drain, this will not solve your problem, you have clog downstream here it what you need to do.

Unscrew and remove the overflow plate, you now have a clear shot at the trap.
You can rent a Ridged K50 sink cable.) About 2' down you will run into the bend of the trap. Crank and push at the same time to work around it. Your blockage will be found in the lateral pipe going to the stack. You shouldn't have to put out more then 10 or 12 feet. I have found tub and shower clogs to be mostly hair and the worm should auger into it and pull it back, see the image below, Good Luck.

I have the same drain and have run into the same issue. Worst drain plug I have ever had. Will try using a hanger to pull out the hair, hopefully it isn't too bad. Otherwise... renting that cable. Eeek! Here goes!
