I have a house that has it's own well. I have very low water pressure in the house and have checked different points back to where the water comes into the house. All the spigots in the pipes had low pressure. There is a spigot where the pipe comes into the garage before going into the water filter and pressure tank. The pressure is low here too. I can put my thumb over the spigot when it open all the way and can stop the water with my thumb completely. I can hear the pump running and it doesn't shut off, it doesn't generate enough pressure to raise the pressure switch to shut off the pump. What is the problem here?

Any suggestons will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input.

Alaska, I am assuming you have a jet pump as opposed to a submersible pump. Either way, your first step is to go to your breaker box and turn off the pump before it burns up. You could be facing one of several problems, but more than likely there is a leak in the suction pipe in your well. When you turn off the pump, do you lose your prime?


Also, what pressure does your pressure gauge show?

The pump IS a submersible pump. So it will not lose prime since it is down in the well casing. The pressure measured at the pressure tank was at 30lbs. Seems like the pressure never gets high enough for the pressure switch to shut off the pump so it keeps pumping.

If the pump keeps running but pressure does not rise, it can be:

1. Well water level is down to the pump.
2. Well pipe has a leak and keeps the pump from pumping up to sufficient pressure to turn off pump.
3. Pump going bad.

Do you know how far down the pump is?

Thank you all for helping me out. Your suggestions helped me localize the problem and it turned out to be a hole developed in the second pipe from the bottom of my deep well. My well is 180 feet down. The hold developed through corrosion from the inside of the galvanized pipe that was in the well. My water ph is very high and very nasty. The well is only 6 years old. I have replaced the pipe with schedule 80 plastic pipe now and I think the pipe will outlast the pump.
