    Taxes on a house
    Can someone own my house if they pay the back do taxes and the house is in my grandmothers name which she is no longer living.

    Hello:

    If the house is in your grandmothers name and she isn't living, the house SHOULD have gone through probate court to determine WHO the owner is.

    So, until THAT is done, it's anybody's guess who owns the house.

    Well first it is not "YOUR HOUSE" it is a house that is owned by the estate of your grandmother.

    Unless there is a will specificly giving you the house, it is up for grabs to the heirs or may have to be sold to settle debts of the estate. So the house has to go though probate to have ownership changed.

    A house that has back taxes will go up for auction by the county. ( in most places in the US) at that point how they finally own the house varies, in some they own it the day of he sale, in others they have to wait up to 3 years after they pay the taxes to take over ownership of the house.
    But yes, if there are back taxes due, someone can take the house away from you
