It's a little hazy but I think I remember the context for these verses. In short, I understand Jesus to be relaying an important insight into the minds of the prophets of old to his disciples. The revelations that believers in the Old Testament had received from God were successive relevations over time. When Moses received the law and certain prophetic insights, he had just a small picture of the future unfolding of history from God's perspective with regard to his coming Messiah. Little by little, God added more dimension and scale to this picture to David, and successive prophets after him. The serious scholar of the Old Testmament had a very vague picture of exactly what the precise events surrounding the coming of the Messiah would be like or consist of. They had certain clues about his coming and that he was coming at all. Did they have an accurate picture of what he would do when he came? I don't think so. But what's important to see, I think, is that Jesus is stating here that his disciples are truly blessed to see him and hear him when so many who had come before him could only squint an eye and imagine that day... Jesus is relaying the anticipation and longing to his disciples that believers in God had for so many ages before.

When you consider how many generations of people had come before the disciples of Jesus, you can understand how truly remarkable the events of Jesus' day really were to those who were his disciples and understood all that the prophets had declared so long ago—remarkable from their perspective.

What was your question about the interaction of the lawyer and Jesus (I was just curious what your thoughts were)? You also stated that there are two other teachings mentioned... which two are you referring to?

There was but one other that I could see but there may have been more.
The about the Lawyer APPEARS to say that eternal life is yours IF you obey all the 2 great commandments indicate and of course the Ten Commandments are covered in the 2 great ones.

When this section of dialogue is read, I'm constantly reminded on how many "lawyers" there are in the church. These people seek to have something to boast about of themselves and always ask "what do I do to get saved?"... instead of looking at what God has done to save us without our help.

The full glory is God's and not ours "lest any man should boast".
