A 10-year-old has 20/20 distance vision, and 20/60 near vision. What refraction abnormality does he have?

Hyperopia, or nearsighted.

Really?? 20/20 or 6/6 as it is in the uk refers to a patients visual aquity in the test room there's usually some kind of chart with different size numbers, letters or pictures these are given a distance i.e. 20 and the test is done at a distance of 20 hense the 20 line can be clearly seen at a distance of 20 feet hense the 20/20... your child could only see the 60 size hense 20/60 this could be either long sighted or short sighted or even astigmatism... the distances for the pictures are determinded by snellen (the man that invented the chart and how to determine visual probs) his perfected eyed assistant could see that pic from 60 feet whereas you child could only see it from 20. No need to worry though if the optician didn't prescribe glasses they may think his vision is still OK with out

Also he needs extra help for closer work which is a plus but different from long sightedness

This patient is most likely hyperopic.

Presbyopia is the loss of the ability to accommodate (focus near objects) with increasing age. Treatment = reading glasses.

Someone with astigmatism is unlikely to be able to see 20/20 distance and is also unlikely to have so much trouble reading or seeing other near objects.
