My husband and I built a new home and we have been living here for approx. 14 months. We have two guest rooms on the main floor. There is a bathroom between these two rooms. One of these guest rooms have only been used twice. The first visitor came to us after one night in there and said there was a very strong fish smell in the room. We searched all the vents checked outlets, we could not find anything. This guest left and so did the fish smell. I'm in and out of this room constantly and never smelled that again. We just had another guest and before they arrived my husband and I went in this room and put fesh linens on the bed. (No Smell what so ever) Our guest arrived and the first thing he said to me the next morning was, There was a fish smell in that room that was so bad I had a hard time going to sleep. I went in the room asap and as soon as I walked in I could smell fish. I again checked everything out and could not find anything. My guest left that day and so did the fish smell. We know the house in side out. We were the general contractors of this house. We are retired home builders so we know what is in the walls. The room has no odor what so ever now. We don't have a clue and we have checked every possible thing that could be checked.

Have you checked your lights? Not for ghosts but for melted plastic. Sometimes a fishy smell and burning plastic smell similar. The plastic "flax" near the bulb can fall out of place,heat up and start to slowly melt. Check the ceiling light, if there is evidence of melted plastic that might be the fish smell. If that's not it call the ghostbusters! :eek: Good Luck!

I've been scouring the internet for information, and it looks like you're far from being alone when it comes to having a fishy smell in a home from an unidentified source.

You're most likely dealing with a dead animal problem, which could happen within the walls or under your floor boards. A tiny mouse, a little snake... death stinks. I'm inclined to suspect it might be a snake because they are bit fishy, but decomposition can turn into all kinds of smells. If this is the case, it can be very hard to find the culprit. We had a dead squirrel in our new house once, and the smell was awful. It was not constant, however. It seemed to get worse when any of the central air conditioning was turned on, but it was only in one corner of the fourth and fifth floors. It took one of our caretakers many, many tries before he actually found it.

If this is the issue, and if you really can't find it, no matter how gross it may sound, it will go away on its own. I would suggest having your guests sleep in the other guest room for now. Otherwise, use a good odor neutralizer in the fishy smelling room.

The other option would be a tiny pipe leak, which would become noticeable when your guests are using the guest bathroom.

Omg just checked out our light fitting & it was melting, I've already threw out a TV & an extension lead thinking it was them that was the problem, I knew it was something electric as my dad told me yrs ago about a fishy smell being electric, so thank you for the advice x
