At seventeen in America, if your parents let you smoke is it legal?

It's not illegal for a 17 year old to smoke. It IS illegal to buy tobacco, however, and it IS illegal for an adult to buy tobacco for a minor. So, grow your own, dude.

It is illegal to smoke under the age of 18, just as it is illegal to drink under the age of 21. Purchasing cigarettes with a fake ID is just another way of getting in trouble.

That isn't what you asked. You said you smoke and who cares if it's legal. Your smoking is legal.

I am not aware of any State where smoking under age is illegal - nor is the possession of cigarettes under age illegal.

Buying them with false proof - or anything else with false proof - is. It is also illegal to buy cigarettes for someone under legal age.

I think it's a catch 22. In theory you can't smoke because you can't buy cigarettes and no one can buy them for you.

Bunch of underage kids at a party, some drinking, some smoking. The drinking ones get carted off; the smoking ones get told how bad it is for their health.

If I'm wrong, please somebody come along and correct me. I just have never heard of an underage cigarette law -
