    How to protect shelves
I just recently built some cabinetry for my office. I stained the sides and fronts. I painted the inside and shelves with a latex semi gloss paint. What can I put on the shelves to protect them since books will be pulled in and out on them? Can I put a water based polyurethane on them or what would you suggest?

You already have a washable latex semi gloss inside. The shelves will be entirely cleanable with a damp cloth.

What you could do to ease your mind is run an uninterrupted strip of plastic wrap along each shelf. If you are extremely careful, run without creases, it will work.

    Hi, cleanqueen!

I do agree with tickle about the paint being washable. If the books aren't removed and put back on the shelves a lot, then just the paint should suffice as far as protection. However, if the books are removed and put back a lot, then the coat of polyurethane would be a good idea.

    Thanks!
