    Kohler generator marine 7.3ECD-low CO
I am having a problem with my generator on my boat. I just had the generator worked on and had the exhaust manifold replaced, new injector, new piston rings, and a few other items replaced by kholer generator specialist. I am in the navy and trying to save money. The tech manuals I have don't go far enough in depth on troubleshooting. OK once I got the boat back the generator ran great for two weeks. I got a report that the generator was down. I checked the battery and it was bad. I replaced it. Then I checked the fuses. The f6 fuse which is a 15 amp voltage regulator and battery charging alternator fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse. Then I atempted to start it. It would crank but did not sound like it was firing. I checked for spark. It was not firing. I replaced the two coil packs as well as new plugs. The same problem still exhist. Is there something else that will keep the coil packs from firing. I went as far as taking a new ecm and pulugging it in as well as installing a new voltage regulator. Any help would be appriciated.

. Check the ON/OFF switch for continuity.
. Check for any reset buttons.
. Check all fuses with a multimeter.
. Remove and clean contacts on each fuse with #240 abrasive cloth or steel wool--lightly coat with dielectric grease.
. Rebuild/replace alternator--voltage regulator, brushes, slip rings may need servicing.
. Call Sales & Service at 800.544.2444 or corporate at 920.565.3381. Ask them if there's an Ignition Control Module (ICM) that could be bad (preventing spark) or if that function is provided by the ECM. I would also ask them where you can get a complete Parts Manual. Describe your problem to them and they can likely troubleshoot the problem over the phone. Since you replaced the ECM and it didn't solve the problem, I suspect a bad ICM. ICMs are "electronic points," that open and close voltage to the primary coil field. This results in "step up" voltage to the secondary. ICMs contain a microchip that gets destroyed by heat.

. Only use full-synthetic engine oil (e.g. Mobil 1) in a crucial (and expensive) piece of equipment like this.

If the unit has high hours on it do a valve adjustment the map sensor doesn't sense vacuum it won't trigger the ecm to put spark out, sounds like it doesn't make sense, but it works.
