Can use butter when a cake calls for shortening?

I have done this many times. No problem.

I've done it before too. You can also use applesauce- weird I know but it works. We had to make lowfat desserts in a health class I had and I made cookies using applesauce instead of butter. It didn't taste as much like apple as you would think either.
