    Replacing a Push Type Diverter
Hello all! This is my first time here, what a neat forum!! :)

Anyway, the two showers in our house are leaking from the diverter. And in at least one of the showers water continues to come out the tub spout even when you have the shower on and it is impossible to get it to all come out the tub spout (I haven't had a chance to check the other one, we have company and it just started). After reading these forums and my handy Home Depot Plumbing 1-2-3 book I have narrowed it down to a problem with the diverter.

My problem comes in that I can't find an example of what we have or how to fix it. The only examples I can find are for three knob assemblies or for spout diverters. Ours though is a post, or stem if you will, with a smaller post or stem inside of it that you push in to divert water to the shower head. Then when the water is turned off it automatically pops back out and the next time the faucet is turned on it comes out (or is supposed to come out) the spout. Does that make sense? Essentially it's a button you push in. (I did one last quick search and found a picture of what it looks like! Moen 0485 Push Diverter I doubt that is the actual model but that is what it looks like)

I would like to fix it myself but my husband is not much a do-it-yourselfer so he thinks we should call a professional. From what I've read about the other types of diverters it seems like a relatively easy problem to fix and I'd hate to call someone in when I could have done it myself.

Any suggestions on where to find info on this particular type of diverter or is this type going to be impossible to fix myself? I've read through 5 pages of forum after searching for diverter and didn't see anything so I apologize if I am asking something that has been asked before.

Thanks in advance for any info you all have!

    Hey NTP...

This is actually a pretty easy fix. Just need to remove the face plate to the shower valve and then back the diverter out of place using a pair of pliers or a deep socket of the correct size (twist counterclockwise to remove). You should NOT have to shut the water off to change this out!

Then take that diverter over to a local plumbing supply house and see what they can do for you. They should have the part in stock as moen is most poular model I know of... :) If nothing else they should be able to direct you to a local DISTRIBUTOR for moen... if they are already not the local distributor!

You will also want to purchase a very small container of plumber's grease so you can spread a little on the o-ring that surrounds the threads of the new diverter.

There are a couple different diverters for moen so be sure to bring with you to the supply house.

That should be all you need to do here.

Let us know if need more info. Good luck...

To add a bit to Marks answer, Delta has a "push-pull" diverter,(see image) Tub faucet that may help. Good luck, Tom
