We have been noticing a smell coming from the basement and have been trying to find it for some time. I was above the basment ceiling today and noticed 2 studer vents in the space. I went to one vent and did not smell anything. I went to the other vent and smelled the foul smell. Do studer vents go bad or is it normal to be able to small gas from them. It seems to be well secured to the PVC pipe and is not loose. The house is 7 years old. I understand they are supposed to help equal the pressure where a real vent can not happen but I did not think I would smell gas from it. IS there something wrong with this. IS the new wasking machine, front loader putting too much pressure on it. If this is faulty how do I know what size to replace it with and is it easy to replace. I know Lots of questions but I would appreciate the opinions and feedback

A Studor Vent's,(see image) considered one of the better AAVs. But like all things mechanical they can go bad and must be replaced.

. It's probably two inch and it's glued onto the pipe and will have to be cut off. You will need to purchase a new AAV along with PVc cement and primer.

Your washer had nothing to do with the AAV going bad.

Thanks for the reply. I did as you recommended and replaced the Studor / AAV vent today and there is no more smell coming from the vent. I was lucky as this was apprently installed with a previous threaded device and all I haad to do was unscrew the old one, use some tube tape on the new one and screw it in. I guess I wait for the other one to fail as I do not have a close by exhaust pipe to send the gas out
