Hi. I am building a custom tub sunken down in the floor, on the sencond floor, in a new construction home. My plumbers and local supply houses cannot find a solution for a drain. I'm told the only thing that would work is a shower drain, because it can be mudded with a pan, therefore sealed properly. Because it's a tub it has to have a stopper. This is my dilema. I can't find a shower drain with a stopper. I've seen custom tile tubs before. I'm shocked that I can't find anyone to help.

There is a drain specifically made for your application. You cannot really use any other drain. This drain is cast iron, can be separated into two pieces for hot mop. Upper piece is heavy chrome coated and has pull-out ring.Sometimes, Home Depot carries them. I am not sure about the proper terminology, but I think it is called "soaking tub drain". I was trying to Google it to get a photo of it for you but it is not coming up. If I found it, I will post it for you later.

Who the heck is your plumbing parts supplier that cannot help you ? You are not listing your location, but you can Call Ferguson Enterprices at 818/786-9720 in Los Angeles. They will have this drain on shelf.

Mark, that's not drain to be used for Sunken Tub. He cannot use overflow. Here is Sunken Tub Drain you need. It runs about $60.00. It is just like regular Cast Iron Shower drain drain used in hot mop installation - but the upper half is manual closer. It installs the same. No overflow is used. This type of drain is specifically used for Sunken Tubs and / or Japanese type Soaker Tubs. I think these days we call them "Roman Tubs"...

Sunken tub being the key word... huh? :)

Let's think outside the box. You're going to hafta use a flange type shower drain,(see image) to pan your tub so why not check to see if you can adapt the strainer opening to accept a touch toe tub stopper,(see image) and then replace the shower strainer part with the touch toe stopper. I have seen it in HD before. But Ferguson should have it. We buy it from Ferguson all the time. Or look around for another plumbing warehouse that caters to the trade.

You have two methods to choose from here. Milos cast iron drain would have you hot mopping the floor with tar and my PVC one would have you installing a membrane shower pan. Your choice!
Milo, Can you give us a link to your drain. I can't get a hit on the net. You say you've installed a lot of them in your area. I've only seen a few around here. Regards, tom

Actually Tom, you can use PVC liner with this drain, too. But since he is doing custom sunken tub, and on the 2nd floor, I think he will be hot mopping. In any case, here is the link:

Milo, You haven't shown me a drain. All your link shows is a threaded stopper. I disagree that hot mopping is a better way to go on a second floor installation. Here we pan out all our second floor showers. You mentioned that the shower drain was cast iron. Could you show us a image? Is it a flange type? Caulk on? What? So far all I've seen is a threaded stopper and I have lots of them in my image data base including a "Roman Tub Drain" which is all you've shown me so far.

This is the body it sits on. It is Cast Iron. Trim is posted above. Hope that will give you better idea.
