I am trying to connect a water supply line to a used refrigerator. Plumbing has a off the shelf water supply line from the cold water supply and my refrigerator has a pvc looking water line on the back. I have tried attaching a compression nut, ferrule, brass insert, and connecting flare. When I tighten the commpression nut and flare, the connection does not hold onto the plastic pipe. What should I add to have this connection grab the refrigerator's supply line?

If your 1/4 in tubes were not damaged and you installed the coupling correctly you might just need to tighten the two nuts a bit more.

Here is some more.

1. Turn off the water.

2. Put a sleeve and compression nut over the line that will supply the icemaker in order to tightly connect it to the water line.

3. Turn the water back on, and, holding the end of the tubing in the sink or over a bucket, flush the line to remove any debris. Turn the water off again.

4. Connect the line to the refrigerator line using another compression nut.

5. Turn the water back on.

6. Throw away the first few containers of ice to be sure the line is completely clean before you use the ice, good luck.

Wait a minute! You're attempting to connect a compression fitting ointo a flared connection? Most refrigerator's don't have a Plastic water line coming out of it, they have a 1/8th piece of copper that hooks up to the ice maker line with a compression coupling. Track the line back to the connection in the refrigerator. Isn't it a compression type connection? Are you trying to connect two lines together or one line to the refrigerator inlet? Could you be a little more explicit? Back to you, Tom
