I would like to know how old a child needs to be to be able to make their own mind up which parent they want to live with.

A CHILD never has that right. The decision as to which parent a child has to live with is made by a Family Court judge. The judge may take into account the child's wishes. Some states may require the judge to do so. But the decisions is always the judge's.
