On the box it says it is a 100 amp breaker box and I have 1 50 amp breaker .2 30 amps breaker and 3 20 amps breakers if I add all the breaker it is 170 amps and my breaker box is for 100 amps is that how it works? Do I need a bigger breaker box? Is it unsafe that the breaker box doesn't have a main breaker?

It's more than likely intended to be a sub-panel, with a master circuit in a panel above (prior to) it. Personally, I would not have a panel that I couldn't control at a single point.

The sum of the breakers is a completely useless number. A load calculation is the only way to be sure you have enough capacity.

Its safe you still have over current protection on your branch circuits you just can't shut them all off at once . I personally would want a main breaker.

Many locations, GA. For example, require a main disconnect outside the home. I have 2 homes, one built in 2003 and one in 2008. Neither one has a disconnect in the panel, they are in the box with the meter base. This is to allow the fire Dept to kill the power without going into a house on fire.
