Water coming out of my hot water heater
I just instaled a new bonnett on my shower. While adjusting it I turned off the water main valve severl times... on off on off. When I finally got the water to turn off and on properly on the shower, I then turned back on the waters main valve. Then the water heaters T&P valve was fine, but water began to gush out of the pipe. It did not stop. I emediatly turned on a few hot water faucets to run the water thinking it was the pressure and I needed to run the hot water. After a few min. the water color showed rust in it. The hot water began to run out and cooler water was coming out ot the faucet. I turned them off and went to check the pipe. Still water coming out of the pipe. I turned off the gas to the hot water heater and shut off the main water. What should I do at this point?

Sd44 - Take a asprin and call me back I n the morning :: HOLD ON IM JUST JOKIng ,HA HA OK lets get serious , First of all you are going to have to put a new t&pvalve in the hot water tank , pluss if you have a wet dry vacumn yhen put the hose on the exhust side and blow dry the tank out good on the inside before you try to re light it , open the kitchen sink faucet on the hot water side ,turn the main water back on and let it fill up un till you have a really good flow of water comeing out the kitchen faucet , now lets hope there are no leaks turn the faucet ioff and if there are no leaks and it is still dry down around the burning area then go threw the cycle of relighting the pilot light and let it burn a couple minuts then turn the gas to light the
Main heating burner ;; GAS CAN BE VERY DANGERS <SO PLEASE STAY SAFE AND FLLOW THE RULES ON LIGHTIONG > I Don't WANT TO FLY BY A CLOUD TO PICK YOU UP > Good luck and GOD BLESS ;; F.B.E.

    SD44...

First, I would have you lift the lever on the relief valve and then SNAP it back down (do a couple times)... turn water on and see if that fixed this.

If not, and still drips/leaks then do the following:

Shut cold water supply to the water heater

Open the hot side only of all two-handle faucets (do not open single handle faucets/valves)

Open/drain T&P relief valve until no water leaves the valve

Cut the T&P relief valve pipe if T&P valve on top of heater. If T&P valve on the side of heater then simply unscrew the T&P pipe.

Unscrew the old T&P valve and throw away.

Purchase a new T&P valve, a roll of 1/2" teflon tape and a 3/4" sharkbite coupling

Wrap teflon tape 6-7 times around new T&P valve and install the new T&P valve about 4-5 turns or until tight (but not too tight... ;) )

Re-install the T&P pipe (may need to add a coupling here... sharkbite coupling best for this as it requires no soldering (push & connect type fitting)

    Close all faucets

Open water heater cold water shutoff to fill the tank

Purge air/water through lowest hot water faucet (lots of air here and will also see some rust colors, but that's OK)

Open all faucets to purge air out of lines (until water runs smoothly). If any faucets clog up then remove the aerator at the end of the spout and clean that... ;)

    Turn gas back on

Light pilot per instructions on the front of the water heater

Set temperature to about 120F (see manual on side of heater if not sure)

Should be back up and running.

    Good luck...
