    Gateway E4100 Pentium 4 2.6GHz
Does anyone know when the Gateway E4100 Pentium 4 2.6GHz was built?

A bunch of online suppliers are selling refurbs for $159

Some links found, it appears the e4000 series has been around since early 2004

Thanks Seahwk. I couldn't find a thing on mfg date.

Do you think it's worth $159 w/ XP Pro with COA, 512 RAM, 80GB HD, CD/RW + floppy, keyboard, free ship, refurb?

    I like having XP around.

Have you seen pic of it
    Gateway Support - 2800471 Gateway E4100 Computer

Really depends on what you would use it for, you can always upgrade the RAM and hard drive if needed, (definately) RAM
2gb is more than enough and 1 gb you would notice a difference

Gateway Memory - E-4100 Computer Memory Upgrade

Definitely would be good to have an XP machine around and it does help to have a floppy drive avail, it may come in handy at one point

Personally, it is a good deal for what it is and it is nice to have XP around, if net card in unit, can always network the 2 together

The last 3 units I've bought were refurbs at an awesome price, so I'm a believer of refurbs. The money saved makes perfect sense.

    Here's the deal (photo included):

    Gateway E4100 Pentium 4 2.6GHz 512MB 80GB CDRW/DVD XP Professional - B Gateway E4100

    Has Integrated Intel Gigabit Ethernet.

The thing is, since it's a refurb, I don't think it includes drivers. If you don't have a driver for your net card, how do you download the driver from Intel for the net card??

    Catch 22.

Can you download a driver on another PC to a flash drive, then transfer it to the PC that needs it?

Whenever I have downloaded a driver, it was always on the PC in question, and the driver "knew" where to locate itself.

I like the "feel" of this PC. It's vintage, but in my comfort zone. AND IT HAS XP PRO!!

    Seahwk,

    Photos look different??

Do you know what is the max RAM this can handle? Has 4 DIMM slots.

JB, Good to know. You've talked me into it...

Well the one you mentioned first had floppy which matches pic I posted and the link above does not mention floppy.

The link I put up is from a gateway site, so I would assume this is the way it looked when it left the factory but as being refurbished, it could just be the mother board from a e4100 system

But again, one you posted says Professional - B, could be they put out 2 e4100, just different styles

Anyway, here nor there on that though

    E-4100 Memory Specifications
    Standard Memory 128 MB (removable)
    Maximum Memory 4.0 GB
Memory Expansion 4 sockets (2 banks of 2)
Memory Comments PC2700/PC3200 DDR SDRAM DIMMs
    CPU Type Intel Pentium 4
Model Comments 800MHz FSB, Intel 865G Chipset

If it comes with the Gigabit Ethernet card, I would assume as it would have XP installed the driver "might" be there

    If not, this may help
Download Asus P5VD1-X Intel Gigabit Ethernet Driver 8.4.21.0 Driver for Windows NT / Windows 2K / Windows XP - Softpedia

If this does not help, just need to know the model # of the card as I have found it before for someone when you get a hold of it

Well thanks very much for the info and offer to help. Very generous!

Regarding my previous question, how does one download a net card driver if the net card driver is missing (no internet connection)?

BTW: the net card is called:
    Integrated Intel Gigabit Ethernet

Doesn't that mean it's part of the motherboard, and not a separate card?

    seahwk83

Yes, that would be built into the motherboard but don't know if a general XP installation would comes with a driver that will work
XP very well might already have drivers for this when installed

But if not, when you get hold of it, just need to go to device mgr and first see if it is recognized and if not the model type of it should be listed in device mgr or a device will be there with a yellow mark next to it

So if you decide on getting it and something comes up, just ad to this post and will see what can be found

    Thanks.

I'm really curious now. If the driver wasn't pre-loaded, can you download driver on another PC and transfer (flash drive?) to the Gateway that needs it?

Yea, you can download the driver to another computer and then transfer the driver to the new PC and then install the driver after you have it

Sorry, but I think you guys are overthinking this. It's a refurb, not a "kit". It's a Gateway branded computer w/XP. That means it will work, ready to use, out of the box.

    I promise.

Now, of course, you might want to add to it and all, and that's fine, but you won't have to go digging for drivers on a Gateway, it's configured to be working already.

In fact, there's probably TOO much stuff on there. My last Gateway (which I used for 6 years) had a lot of extra goodies on there I had to uninstall.

I agree, if something needed, 99% of time it can be found

    I'm sure you're right.

The reason I brought it up is based on the definition of a Grade B Refurb at Geeks.com (the guys selling the PC).

On their disclaimer, it says Grade B Refurbs may not include drivers, so... I was just wondering how you download a driver if you have no internet connection (due to no driver).

    :-)

    Totally Unrelated Question:

Does anyone know why the post times on this site are many hours off the actual time? I would guess on the order of 10-12 hrs??

    Just curious.
