    Mapp gas?
To solder a sweat valve onto the suction line, can I use propane? I've heard it's not hot enough. Can I use mapp gas? Are there any alternatives?

I've heard to use silver solder, in the long shiny rods. Any other solder that may be suitable for this? We used to use the clamp on shrader valves but my certificate training says that's only temporary, and I concur.

You can use propane... many still do. It just takes a lot longer to get the job done. I use MAPP gas. If you use it, just be sure that the nozzle is designed for it.

As for the solder, I just use the rolls from the plumbing section.

Our resident Plumbing Expert may add more re this, though... so hang tight a few. :)

    I need a special nozzle?

Yes. The basic nozzle, like the first two shown here are NOT for MAPP gas.

... I'll move this to plumbing so Speedball, our plumbing expert, will see it.

Ok thanks for the pic it is very helpful.
Are you saying jumbo flame torch or pencil flame torch for mapp gas? Or both?

No. The jumbo or pencil are for propane only.

I see now I linked to a page of Propane heads. In reality, the fancier ones are probably for both... but to be sure, stick with one on this page.

I use the TS4000. I think is was about $30

    Shunned,

I couldn't began to estimate the miles of copper water pipe I've run using a propane torch and 50/50 solder. I've retired since 89 so I'm not familiar with Mapp gas. Rick would be the expert on that. I still use propane if I have to solder anything. Regards, Tom
