    The perils of oily skin!
Ok, so, I wake up in the morning to find my face very oilly, mainly round my nose. I presume this means I have oilly skin?

I ask because Ive had so much medication because I used to be quite worried about my acne, and I've heard that medication can make dry skin actially act oilly, as it over compensates.

I haven't used topical creams on my face for ages however, and I only use an antibacterial wash at night, so, I thought maybe at last I can get an answer.

Also, is there anything I can do before I go to bed to reduce it in the morning, because the worse it is, the more spots I tend to get.

    Thanks >_<

    Gross subject spots!

My skin is pretty much like yours. Most medication screws it up, and my nose and forehead end up oily in the mornings again anyway.

I recommend washing your face once vigorously in the morning and twice vigorously before bed with a facecloth and just plain warm to hot water (which cleans and closes pores), then splashing with cool water (which freezes pores shut), drying, and applying moisturizer (any kind will work). Put on a ton of moisturizer before bed, especially.

Oily skin is usually a result from the skin over producing sebum (oil), and often it is a result of a hormonal imbalance. If you're using cleansers that are drying and harsh, you may be increasing your skin's oil production. Use a cleanser and toner designed to combat oiliness. You only need to wash your face twice a day (morning and night). If you wash your face more often this will only cause the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. People with oily skin should not use heavy moisturizers. Opt for an oil-free moisturizer.

Pores do not actually open and close... they soften and harden. As for washing your face twice... I would opt for washing it in the evening only. AM should consist of splash of luke warm H2O and then tone, apply serums or moisturizer with spf. Evening , wash, tone and hydrate if nessassary. Your skin heals during sleep and your natural oils are on your face in the am... H2O and toner should be sufficient with a light moisturizer... try PCA or ENVIRON... they have some outstanding products.

    Best of luck

It's perfectly okay to wash your face in the morning. Morning and night are the best times to wash your face. Washing your face in the morning will remove unwanted surface oils and grime, and leaves your skin clean and fresh. Most people wash their faces in the morning and apply skin care products, such as a toner, moisturizer, which is good. It's also very important to wash your face at night to remove makeup, dirt and debris from a full day. I think my previous advice that I've provided was helpful, so I don't need to add on anything else. This thread is almost 3 months old, please try not to post on threads that are over a month old.

Is it true PrettyLady, that if you have a certain amount of oily skin it will help you look younger as you age? I have heard this, as I have oily skin, but I am not sure of the truth of it.

J 9, oily skin is shiny, and makes the skin look dull colored. Often a chronically oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and is prone to blackheads. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil oozes and gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged and the skin has a coarse look.

To cleanse oily skin, use a cleanser that's designed to dissolve sebum effectively. To maintain a shine-free complexion. Use only noncomedogenic moisturizers and make up, they're oil-free and won't clog pores.

I have read that benzoyl peroxide (spelling?) is actually good for people with oliy skin. This is the ingredient in lot of acne products. Have you tried this before?

For oily skin, avoid detergent-based cleansers, or harsh soaps or cleansers that dry out the skin. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, use a cleanser with oil-cutting ingredients like triclosan and alpha-hydroxy acids or salicylic acid. These gently slough the skin.
