Computer reboots by itself. It might work 5 minutes and reboot or several hours and reboot. Any suggestions.

The obvious question here is do you have antivirus, spyware, firewall installed?

It could be a virus causing your problem.

Friends of mine just got DSL and surfed the net and a few days later, one PC rebooted, and the other had a black screen - which I was able to fix with my handy 'first aid' memory stick. They had more than four viruses.

allinone - it might be a pain to subscribe to antivirus and antispy applications and firewalls, but it is far better than losing everything on your hard-drive, especially if it's a big one. Protect you PC and keep your stress-factor down.

Have you recently installed a new program? In addition to viruses it could be a driver issue, specifically video. This happened to me when I put in a dvd-rom and the drivers got enmeshed.

I agree with the above statements, it could be a virus or driver issue. Windows 2000 (&xp) have a feature that automatically reboots the computer on certain errors. You can disable this feature as a troubleshooting tool -you will see the error appear. To do this, right click "my computer" and select "properties". Click the "Advanced" tab and then the "startup and recovery" button. In here you will see a tick box next to "automatically reboot". Take this tick out and you will likely see the error if caused by the above suggestions.

If the computer just acts as if the power has been cut and then comes back on - I would suspect the power supply unit as being faulty.

Before you get any programs do a physical check 1st... make sure your cpu is seated tightly as not to overheat and check the condition of the cpu cooler for dust... clean out if necessary...

I can not tell you how many people thought it was a virus when all it turned out to be was high temps on their cpu shutting the system down and rebooting for no reason... also some turned out to be a faulty power supply...

Might want to check into that just in case

I agree with Tommyp!972. The new intel CPU's come with crappy fan attatchment design, it is very hard to tell if the fan is on tightly enough. Make sure it is totally locked in place.

Try installing sp4 in w2k and this patch MS03-026 (Windows2K-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe).

In XP go to run and then type shutdown -a that will stop the rebooting process, then install SP2.

I agree with all of you, it looks like a worm I would recommend you getting bitdefender this is one of the best antivirus right now. And if you can't remove the antivirus since it will turn off. Would recommend you to reformat your computer. And reinstall your os
