I bought my property 20 yrs. Ago. The county now says my detached garage (existing prior to sale) is substandard and (apparently) was unpermitted. They want it removed within a very short amount of time. I use it for storage and it will create a financial hardship to comply. Any suggestions?

Talk to a lawyer. Most will talk to you for free at first to see if the problem is worth pursuing.

Otherwise... ask them nicely if you can have it repaired, shored up, etc. If neighbors can see it, and it's in disrepair, and they are the source of the problem... perhaps all it needs is a new roof, siding, inner walls reinforced... never hurts to ask.
