If your missing a card then I wouldn't use it and would get a new set.
No. If even one card from the deck is missing the entire deck is no good.
The number of cards in the deck is imperitive to the reading. If one card is missing it throws off the outcome, and then what is the point?
If it is a major arcana that's missing, then you will need to purchase a new deck. But if it is a minor arcana, you could always withdraw ALL the minor arcana from the deck, and use only major. I have seen people do that. Some readers don't acknowledge the minor even if they have a full deck. It all depends on the reader or the client and some just prefer major only.
So, I guess it all depends on which card was lost.
The simple answer (which is easy enough to give, but still has some validity) is: Trust your intuition. I own several decks, usually use Ciro Marchetti's Tarot of Dreams, but sometimes one of the others just speaks to me that it is the appropriate one for a particular work.
So if you feel a strong attachment to this deck, keep it around. I'd buy a new deck if you see one that strikes your fancy (shameless plug for Marchetti--his Tarot of Dreams and his Gilded Tarot both have beautiful artwork). Sometimes you might just be drawn to use the one with the missing card. You get what you get. Lots of decks come with a blank card or a "cover art" card that has the same back as the other cards, you could use that as a stand-in.
Out of curiosity, which one did you lose?
I actully pulled the card out of my deck because I wanted to do a large painting of what was on it on a canvas(it was my favorite) , and misplaced it myself I guess. But I have searched High and low all around the house and cannot find it for the life of me! And yes I am attached to this deck it was given to me by my Aunt, and its my favorite. I really love Fairies, and it's a Fairy deck by Brian Froud, and Jessica Macbeth.
The card is Taitin the Sylph, she stands for acute intellect, quickness, mental synthesis, and discerment.
I tried the deck out and it seems to sill make sense when I use it, I recently pulled the death card, which means new beginins and it really made sense to me, with things that are going on with my life.
I had a missing card from a deck I had for over 20 years, I was so upset! It happened when a bottled water leaked all over my purse in a rental car. I laid the cards out in the back seat to dry before I returned the car, I packed them all up and I guess I missed one.
I later bought a new deck and boy did I have to do some serious stuff to that new card to make it a part of the old deck. I had someone suggest that I "turn the deck" (randomly grabbing a section and twisting that portion upside down... multiple times) I don't remember how many times they suggested but I did it probably 5x as much as they said, I also went over that card with smoke from burning sage and all sorts of oils, incense... I left it out in a full moon over night... I tried to cleanse it in many ways.
it finally became a part of the deck and I started to get readings that made sense.
now here I am years after that incident and my 2 yr old niece found her way to my purse and all my cards were spread out on the floor along with my drivers license, credit cards, make up, keys, cell phone... urgh!
the four of swords is missing! I still have the replacement deck to pull one from but I dread what I am going to have to go through to get the deck to make sense again.
oddly enough I have traveled to spend time with my little niece while her parents are away skiing. I basically volunteered my time with her to be close to her but also to get solitude and distance from all the fires I have had to put out back home, the 4 of swords is the card of "rejuvenation and recuperation" and also indicates "the card commands rest and solitude despite pressing, stressful factors"
the card also states "seclusion can help to combat feelings of frustration, worry, panic, or anxiety" which I had boat loads of!
... the card also illustrates behind the tomb, a stained-glass portrait showing a woman and a child-wow!
I guess the deck is screaming at me while this one card is missing!
I do hope I find it, it will take a while to mean something before the new replacement card is implanted into this old deck.
I am interested I hearing from others about their missing card as to the relation of what was going on in their life at the time and if it correlated in any way.
