Would you happen to have the exact model number of the board? Do you have an external sound card installed?
Need, this is a friend of mine. I believe his sound card is onboard his mobo and hopefully he'll reply with the model no.
OK James - first the stupid question. Have you checked it's not muted. You might have muted it before the upgrade and forgot about it. I know you're not that stupid but it's always best to check.
Did you check the Device Manager (Control Panel >> System >> Hardware Tab >> Device Manager button). Ensure there's no yellow question marks or red crosses under Sound, video & game controllers.
Also while in control panel, check the "sound and audio" properties. Check that a device is selected on the audio tab.
No external sound card, the board is a asus p4c800 or p4p800
James - you're in good hands, I'll bow out. :)
thanks for your help need
checked all that mate. No yellow ! Or any red X.
I am stupid enough to have just muted it but I didn't. Wish I did though.
Don't bow out! That's why I pointed him in this direction - to get help :) I suck at hardware problemsQuote:

I good troubleshooting step would be to see what Windows is attemping to use for sound. Go to Start > Control Panel > System, Hardware tab, click on Device Manager, expand the Sound entry - are there any red x or yellow exclamation marks?
LEE: Nothing in there with soundmax.
NEED: No yellow ! Or red X.
Any other ideas?
Are you plugging your speakers into sound port that is part of the motherboard (near all the other ports such ethernet jack, USB ports, etc.) or are they plugged into a add-on card in the slots below?
Are the speakers plugged into the green hole? (sound output)
Have the speakers been used elsewhere and are known to be working well?
Did you get a CD with the motherboard?Quote:

I once accidentally-on-purpose removed this from Add/Remove Programs and my sound card stopped working. This could be something similar.
See if you have anything SoundMAX related on the motherboard CD you should have got with the board and try installing it.
The speakers are running now off my mp3 fine, just not on PC.
They are in the green port on the mother board, no pci sound card.
OK just doing it now
If it's a PC from a large manufacturer like Dell they often have the audio drivers for your model available for download at their website.
Just installed the software
Nothing
It was a dell but now has a new mother board. So not a dell no more
Hmmm... let me think out loud here...
You swapped the MB but kept the same hard drive that has the same drivers... Windows must still think that your previous soundcard/chip is still running the show. Are you sure there isn't anyhting sound-related to uninstall from Add/Remove Programs?
Nothing in there mate, as far as I can tell there is only 1 audio device detected, I had the upgraid done at a shop. Just didn't want the pain of having to drive it back down there, I guess ill have to to save you 2 all this trouble.
Do you have the "volume" icon? There are a lot of faders in that control that could be "muting" everything. You also may have Soundmax muted also. If your not even getting the windows logon sound this would appear to be getting closer as long as your soundcard is enabled.
