I work for the State of Oklahoma. My position requires me to live on location 5 days out of the week. They also require me to pay rent on my apartment. They refuse to take the rent out of my check, so I am having to pay an additional 20% on my rent that goes back to the state. So, my question is: Is it legal for them to require my co-workers and I to pay rent on a required living location, And if it is OK for them to do that, Is it legal for them to basically "double dip" (paying me and then making me pay them back after I have paid taxes)?

Nothing sounds illegal about it. Residency requirements for civil service workers are legal. Nothing requires them to pay you for housing. Its not double dipping since housing costs are not considered pretax employment expenses.

I don know that some companies require that their employees live within specific districts and it seems you are in this situation.

I agree with ScottGem about the double dipping.

I do live there, but we have to live there sonday through Thursday. It is mainly set to 5 days just to allow us to get away from being at work 24/7. I also have to live in a specific building or I would be more than willing to buy a house.
