I have a sentimental desire to plant a seedling from my grandmothers Norway Maple tree in my own back yard. Last summer I dug up five seedlings and drove 3 days and planted them.

I think they would have done well except that the bunnies ate the leaves as fast as they could grow.

I can't drive across the country to collect more trees. Does any one know how to package a tree and send it in the mail.

If it can get here safely I can cage it up and protect it from the bunnies.

I think it is a fine idea to have a tree that is a seedling from your grandmother's tree. Commercial nurseries dig up the trees after they go dormant in the fall, often shipping them bare root. I think that works best in very sandy soil. Likely it is too late to ship a seedling that is still dormant with or with a ball of dirt. Perhaps the best thing would be to mail you a big handful of the seeds, the maple helicopters that clog rain gutters. Plant them sallow in some rich soil and make sure the dirt doesn't stay dry. I would keep a few of the better seedlings for a few years to make sure nothing happens.
