My free trial of Norton expired two months after I got my computer, and I told my dad to add that to the list of software I needed to buy and for him to install-- he, being a professional programmer and software engineer and all... Daddy says "Pssh, you don't need that."

Nearly two years without problems... and then...

... Suddenly yesterday, I have viruses and warning pop-ups coming out of my ears. My laptop is melting on my desk as I type right now. Thanks a lot, Daddy. Can I have another new computer now?

You can always buy Norton much cheaper on the internet yourself. I get a year's subscription for less than $20 when I shop on the net for it versus buy it from Norton. I get a disk mailed to my home. I guess you couldn't have afforded $20.

All you'll be able to do at this point is to reformat your hard drive and reload everything again.

Yes, you can buy Norton, but you don't need to.

AVG Free is awesome (though I bought the PRO version because it does RootKit defense, too... brilliant).

Avoid Avg... IT'S GARBAGE. Locked up my computer several times. Uninstall very difficult. Spoke with the GEEK SQUAD about AVG... NOTHING POSITIVE WAS SAID USER BEWARE...

AVG is OK, however the Geek Squad should be avoided as most as possible.

Let me guess.
Geek Squad recommended Norton or some other PAY FOR product they had on the shelves, or paid the most commission.

For your information s... I made a statement about my experience with avg... As for the geek squad trying to sell me something, I asked they told me there is not much software that can help... So go yourselves

Just a note regarding Norton AntiVirus, if you use it now, before your subscription is up look for sales that include a rebate for previous owners. By doing that, you will get it for free or darn close to it.

Whatever you end up using make sure you have a multi-level setup going! Make sure your built-in defender/firewall is enabled thus adding to the protection.

I use AVG Pro and I love it, it's real simple and has been worth every penny. AVG Free is good as well. And if your computer locks up when trying to install it's YOUR COMPUTER NOT THE AV :)

PS. People at GeekSquad work at Bestbuy for a reason and not IT firms or corps.

For all the spyware I've also used ad-aware. It's available free for download.
