I bought a set of used vented gas logs. I have it hooked up and gas/flame comes out of the burner in the middle of the pan, but nothing comes out of the burner tube in the front. Isn't this the tube that heats the "embers"? I have turned the valve in the picture that goes to the front tube, but it does not seem to do anything.
Also, do I put sand in the tray? If so, how does the gas get lit without some type of pilot light?
Does anyone know what brand this setup is?

I do not see a safety pilot on your gas log set up. AS far as I know code wise the set up you have does not comply from a safety standpoint. I would check with your local building department as to the ruel regarding this item.

I also do not see a main gas shutoff unless it is located elsewhere. It has to be located in a readly accessible area within arms reach of the fireplace. This is a safety item and it is also used to control the gas flow to the gas logs.

Speaking of gas logs. I do not see the pressure regulator valve also.
If these logs are to be used in a manufactured fireplace like you have they need to be listed and labeled for that usage by the fireplace manufacturer and also by UL/CSA.

What is the valve to the left of the picture, that goes from the main burner to the front?

I'm guessing here. I can't figure out how the thing lights by itself unless it somehow creates self-ignition.

That tube in front. I see no reason why it should emit gas. It may actually be a regulator and mixes air with the gas depending on the temperature of the tube. Essentially a log sitting on the tube would regulate the flame. At room temp, adjusting the flame may have zero effect.

There is no regulator in the picture, nor shut off valve.

It does not have an ignition, I have to light it manually.
