    Missing 401k
My husband worked for Ford Motor Company. He had a 401k with them. They since (a few years ago) sold off the division in which he worked for. He can not locate any statements or paperwork since moving a few times since. Is there any way of finding his missing 401k?

    Have you tried contacting Ford?

When he files for Social Security, they will inform him of any retirement funds held for him.

Thank you for getting back to me Scott but yes, we have contacted Ford. They keep stating that they have to look into things because that division of Ford is no longer. This has been going on now (that we've tried to find it) for 1 1/2 years now. I understand that there are a number of groups it could be in on but we've tried all the major goups that we can think of.

It's their respondibility to either find it or tell you who to contact. Press them on it.

Did your husband leave Ford before his division was sold off? If so, are you absolutely sure that his 401(k) went to the new company and is not still at Ford? I would keep after Ford, but here are so other avenues to try:

    1. Contact the company that Ford sold his Division to and ask them about the 401(k).

    2. Ask former colleagues if they know who the administrator of the 401(k) plan is.

    3. Most plans are required to file an annual "Form 5500" with the U.S. Government. You can search these 5500's for the name of the new company at free websites like Welcome to freeErisa.com!. If you can find a Form 5500 on the plan, it will have contact information.

    4. The final suggestion is go online and search for abandoned property in the state you lived in at the time. If you have not been receiving statements from the 401(k) plan administrator they may now consider you lost, and by law they would have turned your assets over to the state. Every state has a program to try to reunite people with their lost assets. You can do a Google search using the name of your state and "unclaimed property" and that should take you to a web site with information on how to track it down.
