How do I access files on my network via my Palm Treo
I have a home network that includes a Network Attached Storage device (ReadyNAS Duo) connected to the Net via a Cable modem and a router.

I want to set up a folder on my NAS where I can store certain files that I want to be able to access from my Treo via the internet.

Can anyone explain to me how I can do this or point me to a resource where I can learn how to do this?

Which Treo do you have? The Windows Mobile or the Palm?

Typically, the only way you can transfer files is through Active Sync to the desktop. For email, we setup MS Exchange with Active Sync and published the web site and certificate server via our ISA server to an external address. You then istall the certificate on your Treo and you can get your email via the Internet. This then lets you download files as attachments.

One thing we have not tried is an FTP site. This may be a possibility for you. Some home routers will allow you to publish a resource externally via one of the switch ports. If you had IIS installed with FTP, you may be able to get your files that way.

I have the Palm TREO 680 which has the Palm OS. I have Web access on the device. I had in mind setting up a folder on my ReadyNAS Duo and accessing it from the web via the Palm. The folder would contain an HTML page containing data that I want to be able to access when I am away from my computer.

I need help in setting up a folder on my NAS for web access via my Palm TREO.

I have the same Treo for my work phone. The Exchange Active Sync works only for the Windows Mobile devices that we also use, so we use the Good Server to make our Exchange email server available via the Internet to our Palm devices. Works real well although, the Internet browsing leaves a little to be desired.

The real trick is to get this available to the Internet. If your Internet connection is a standard home use connection, they you will not have a static IP address. This makes it difficult since you will constantly have to monitor what IP address your ISP has delegated to you for your Internet connection. A fixed IP address for your Internet connection is much more desirable.

Then you will need to make a web site available to the Internet. Explore the capabilities of your router to see if you can assign a specific switch port for external access. You will need to make ports 80 and 21 available for HTTP and FTP.

On the PC whose resources are made available, you will need to add Internet Information Services in your Add/Remove Windows Components options.

Once this is done, you can create a virtual folder to your NAS box, making the files and folders on your NAS available to your web site.

You can also create virtual folders in the same manner on the FTP server but a physical folder of the same name as the virtual folder name will also need to be created in the FTP root folder in order for the virtual folders to be visible to FTP.

Oh... another thought. There are VPN clients available for the Palm device. You can setup your network for VPN access. From my Treo 680, I can VPN into our corporate network and remotely connect to any of our servers and run the OS through terminal services.

Movian makes a good VPN client for Palm OS and there are numerous RDP clients out there for the Palm to run Terminal Services.

    Chuckhole,

Thanks for the advice. I will work on this when I have some time - hopefully this weekend. I will post how I do.
