I have read through a thread on toilet flanges and I have a question. I am adding 1/2" of cement board and tiles to my bathroom floor. I plan to raise the toilet flange by cutting the steel flange (rusted) off the PVC pipe and gluing a new flange into the old one after I have put in my floor. My waste pipe is PVC. Does it sound like I have the right idea? And do you recommend a steel, PVC, aluminum or brass flange?

Hi Dave,

While your plan would work, let me give you a few options that are less hassle. You could use a flange extender or a deep flange with a "O" ring that fits inside the PVC stub-up ,(see images) With the flange extender you can build up to floor level or with the deep flange you leave the old flange alone and put down your tile floor. The deep flange slips inside the stub-up past the old flange and the "O" ring makes a seal. To secure the deep flange you may drill through the tile and screw the flange to the finished floor. You may now reset the toilet in the normal manner. Good luck, Tom
