I pretended I had sporting event tickets, and sold them for $1200. I felt guilty and refunded the money, but the people are still upset.

What charges am I looking at?

Yes, the name of the crime will differ depending on where you are at, each state in the US may name it differently.

1. it would be a felony because of the dollar amount

2. if you used the internet and/or telephone to do the deal that can add some additional charges in some area

3. Even giving the money back does not change the crime, it only helps in the sentence you may get.

I would hire an attorney and see if he can deal with the people for some settlement that they would agree to , if they would not press charges . ** unless they already have pressed charges.

I know it's a little late, but you should NOT have spoken with them. They're not looking for "your side" of the story. They're not there to help you. They're looking for evidence to convict you. If you told them what you told us, you snitched on yourself.

They talked to me because someone dropped my name.
It was actually 4 people that we scammed.
Me and my friend, who dropped my name.
The 3 people don't want to do anything, and the fourth are thinking about pressing charges, as far as I know.

But it was all paid back, which I thought would help me get this cleared up.

Once the cops are involved, it's no longer up to the victim in terms of pressing charges. If the cops think there was a crime, there's going to be charges.

As the Padre said above, paying it back and your cooperation AREN'T going to help get the charges cleared up. It MIGHT help you at sentencing.

The cop told me it was up to the victim whether to press charges.
It is the University Police.

He said the form of punishment, if the victim doesn't press, will come from the school.

Cops lie. They're even allowed to according to law, if they're trying to get a confession. Dude, your cops lied! When they turn their reports in, a local prosecutor will look them over to see if there's enough evidence for a conviction. If there is, you're toast.

Also, I never touched the money.

My partner was the one handling it all, and I had no link to the money, just getting people to give money to the paypal account.

Well at times campus police are less likely to press charges, esp if your parents are wealthy enough to give a nice donation. Or if you are a jock that dept may get a person off before the report goes to the DA.
** got to love campus police, since they don't want to show a lot of crime on campus.

But yes, cops lie, I did it all the time, tell the mother that if she told us all about it, we would try and work thing out, or tell them if they would just confess I am sure nothing would happen and so on,
