Don't cancel the contract. When my Sprint phone was stolen I called them and they turned it off so no-one could use it and run up the bill. Then they sent me another phone. I had the insurance that covers the phone being lost/stolen or damaged. I had to pay a $50 deductible to have it replaced, it's free to fix it though.
Maybe you didn't get the insurance, you should, it's only $3 extra a month or something. But still if you buy another phone it sounds like it would be less expensive than paying all those penalties for cancelling your contract!
