I am trying to configure my Hunter Thermostat for Winter use..

First off, I realize that Hunters aren't the best, but unfortunately, it's all I have to work with..

I had replaced the existing thermostat with the Hunter at the beginning of the summer season here in FL... Try as I might, I could NOT get the HEATER part of the thermostat to work. But, since the AC was all that was needed (then) I didn't worry too much about it.

We're now entering the "cold" season and the family is clamoring for heat..

Here is what I have, wiring wise..

The thermostat wires are GREEN, RED, YELLOW, BROWN & WHITE..

I have it wired now as such:

GOODMAN--------HUNTER
GREEN--- <-> ---GREEN
RC/RH--- <-> ---RED
Y/O ----- <-> ---YELLOW
W/B----- <-> ---WHITE

The Y1 on the Hunter is not connected and the BROWN wire on the GOODMAN is not connected.

As things are now, the AC part works fine, but the HEAT does not.

According to an online PDF for my GOODMAN Package Heat/Air unit, the wires mean thus:

LEAD THERMOSTAT
Red-------R (24V)
Green-----G (Fan)
Yellow-----Y (Cool)
White-----W1 (Heat)*
Brown-----W2 (Heat)*

If anyone could help out, I would be most appreciative. Well, the family would. I have thick blood, so I am cozy as a clam. But, with a newborn in the house, obviously heat is a necessity.

Exact model number for the Hunter Thermostat. I believe you will need a 2 stage heat thermostat and the one you have is a one stage. It probably will not work but I need to look up the thermostat to be sure.

If it IS a single stage, is there any way to temporarily jury-rig it to put out heat? Just long enough for me to get into town to get the proper one.

Brown/W2 could be put on W which would call in the electric strip heat according to Goodman BUT I would check to be sure the Brown is on W2 at the furnace. Second stage is usually the electric furnace First stage us usually the heat pump..

This unit doesn't have a heat pump. The heat comes from an electric element that is contained within the central air unit.

I have traced the brown wire from the thermostat back into the central air unit and it goes to the 6-post plug that plugs into the heating element..

So, if I understand you correctly, you are saying that, if things are as I posted, I should put the Brown AND the White wire on the same W/B position?

If you do not have a heat pump system then you do not have two stages of heat.

NOTE: the outside A/C unit can be a heat pump model.

The Goodman PDF showed wiring for a heat pump. So before you go changing things you better find out if you have a heat pump or not for sure.

From the GOODMAN site:

"Packaged air conditioners cool your home and can heat it as well, using electrical strip heat."

This is definitely the unit I have..

OK, according to the lady at Goodman, this unit is an older 10 SEER SINGLE STAGE COOLING UNIT with a HK10-1 Heating Element..

I know I had it hooked up with the previous thermostat (RiteTemp 8085C) so that both HEAT and COOL worked..

I just didn't pay attention to the wire settings when I put in the new Thermostat..

I don`t see where you said you have a heastpump,, do you have a jumper from Rh to Rc,, on the hunter tstar

Yes I do...

It appears I have had some success..

Following the lead of HVAC, I first tried the BROWN & WHITE WIRE on the W/B point.

No luck..

So, I took the WHITE WIRE off and just left the BROWN wire on and viola'... It worked!!

I got the distinct smell of unused heating coils and it blew out warm air.

Seems to be working now. :D

Actually I was looking at the original wiring diagram she provided from the goodman site. Which shows two stage heat. See below

Michael the only wires you need to connect are the red,yellow,green, and Brown. The thermostat should be set for single stage heat if it is adjustable for this purpose. The brown wire should trigger the electric heat to work.

Use the 4 wire heat and cool wiring diagram since you do not have a heat pump. If the fan comes on OK if not you will have to switch from HG to HE on the thermostat switch. If all else fails read below.


You might also try 1-888-830-1326 to speak with a live support representative if this cannot be sorted out.

Glad you got it going. SAVE the thermostat diagram on your computer just in case you might need it again.
