    Buried cable
I need some advice and information about running underground wiring to an outbuilding. I want to run 3 or 4 lights and 3 or 4 plugs. They would not all be in use at once. I have a friend who can supply me with #10 wire. Is that OK to use? How deep does it need to be buried? What should I use to dig the trench? Could I also bury a water pipe in the same trench? Any advice would be appreciated.

    What kind of "#10" wire??

#10 is simply the size of the conductor.

He said it is #9 " twisted wire" and can be used underground or even underwater. It is used by the rail road he works for.

Then it is HIGHLY doubtful you can use it for your application. The railroads use very different material than we do.
Even so, the description you are giving does not tell us what kind of wire it even is.
